Glendurgan: A Personal Memoir of a Garden in Cornwall

Author: Charles Fox
ISBN: 0906720354
Description:
‘Once … I was sitting on a stile and seven swans flew over my head, inches away. I walked on and came across an entire family of foxes at play. For both the animal and the man there was no more beautiful place in which to be raised.’ That place was Glendurgan, one of three valley gardens created by three brothers near Falmouth.

Charles Fox tells the story of the garden started by his great-great grandfather, Alfred Fox, relating its development to that of the Fox gardens at Trebah, Penjerrick and Rosehill, and to other famous Cornish gardens. He describes how succeeding generations of a Quaker family used opportunities in the shipping and travel world to introduce rare and exotic plants to their gardens, and how that tradition continues under the National Trust, to create what is today ‘a unique repository for exotic plants, and a centre for the purposeful propagation of rare and tender species’.

A note on measurement

‘Alison Hodge has come up with another great book for Gardeners & Garden Historians. It is lavishly illustrated which makes browsing both tempting and rewarding and there are many enjoyable quotes. Apart from being a fun book to browse Glendurgan encapsulates the nineteenth and early twentieth century garden mania in Cornwall. ...
‘... Charles Fox ... sets his story in a social and economic context that sheds new light on our knowledge of Cornish Gardens, their inter-relatedness and the exotic horticulture they spawned. There is real gardening in the book and it is a huge relief to get away from the garden centre/garden makeover standards and wallow in a text written with real interest and passion.’ (The Garden History Society News, 72, Autumn 2004)

‘This is a detailed and intimate history of the valley garden overlooking the River Helford. ... It is as much an affectionate family portrait as the story of a landscape.’ (The National Trust, 103, Autumn 2004)

‘Charles Fox ... admits to his passion for the place and its flora – and to an enthusiasm for sharing them with others. He has written a lively history of the garden’ (Hortus, 71, Spring 2005)

‘This is much more than a description of a garden and its plants...
‘The book is lavishly illustrated with reproductions of historical photographs, early watercolours and superb contemporary colour photography ... a beautifully produced book.’ (Cornwall Gardens Trust Journal, 2005)

‘With considerable skill Charles Fox not only unravels and relates the story of five generations of the extraordinary Fox family and the gradual growth of the garden at Glendurgan ... but also paints a portrait in words of a way of life and of a Cornwall that, unlike the garden, have ceased to grow and have all but gone.’ (The Cornishman, 15.07.04)

‘Excellent value, a "must" for all garden lovers and as well written as it is generously illustrated ... leaves its reader secure in the knowledge that, in the person of Charles Fox, Glendurgan has a "steward" par excellence.’ (Western Morning News, 14.08.04)

‘In his foreword to Glendurgan Tim Smit calls this book "marvellous" and it is. Even before you begin to read, it is a pleasure to pick it up, for it is professionally designed and it shows, and beautifully illustrated in colour throughout.
‘... Besides providing a feast for garden and plant lovers, it is a joy to read for its quotes and his personal observations and recollections of both Fox family members and visitors.’ (Old Cornwall, vol. XIII, no. 4, Spring 2005)

‘Charles Fox recounts both past and present with humour and passion. Good pictures.’ (Historic Gardens Review, no. 15, August 2005)

Glendurgan: A Personal Memoir of a Garden in Cornwall was awarded First Place in its class in the 2005 Holyer an Gof Awards for the best Cornish publications of 2004.
